Broadband bills after cancellation in Ireland: how to dispute a charge

Still billed after cancelling broadband? Compare your end date, notice period and equipment charges, then write a complaint your provider can investigate.

By TBD · Sources checked · Republic of Ireland

A bill after cancellation may cover a final balance, notice period, early termination fee or an error. Compare each charge with the confirmed service end date before asking for a correction. Keep the cancellation request and provider’s reply together.

What you need to know

ComReg’s complaint-handling rules require an acknowledgement within two working days and a response within ten working days. That is a response deadline, not a guarantee of resolution. If the complaint cannot be resolved then, the response must explain the next steps required by those rules. Start with your provider and keep the complaint reference.

Read the official sources below for the detail and current procedure.

Documents and details to keep

  • Cancellation request, acknowledgement and confirmed end date.
  • Bills with each disputed entry and a total you can explain.
  • Contract terms, equipment-return receipt and provider replies.

What to do first

Ask the provider to record your complaint and explain the basis for each disputed charge. Distinguish amounts you accept from those you challenge. Cancelling a direct debit does not cancel a contract, and switching one service does not establish that every part of a bundle ended. Ask how the account will be handled while the complaint is considered.

A fictional example

In this fictional example, a provider confirms that broadband ended in June but the customer receives service charges for July and August. The customer attaches the end-date confirmation and asks for an explanation of those entries. This is not a reported refund or regulator decision.

What you could write

Adapt only if accurate for your facts. This is not a court document or formal statutory notice.

Please record my complaint about account [reference]. Your confirmation states that broadband ended on [date], but the attached bills include [later charges]. Please explain the period and contractual basis for each amount, correct any error and give me a written response and complaint reference.

How TBD can help

TBD can help you put the dates and charges into a draft. The letter tool below opens with broadband billing selected; you supply and check your own facts. We are not ComReg and cannot require a provider to cancel a charge. Preparing a letter does not mean it has been sent.

If the first letter does not resolve it

Consult ComReg’s current consumer-care guidance if an acknowledgement or response is missing, or you are dissatisfied with the response. Keep the first complaint date, reference and replies. If court documents arrive, get appropriate advice and follow their deadlines rather than treating them as another customer-service message.
